Every Fourth of July we celebrate the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. We wave the flag, gather with family, and remember the sacrifices made by generations before us.
But this Independence Day, I’d like to invite you to think about three symbols that tell one incredible story.
The Flag. The Cross. The Empty Tomb. The American flag reminds us that freedom isn’t free. Brave men and women sacrificed so future generations could enjoy liberty.
Our Founding Fathers understood that our rights come from our Creator, and that true freedom flourishes when we recognize a moral authority greater than ourselves.
Yet even in the freest nation on earth, many people still feel trapped in Fear, Shame, Anxiety, Addiction, Regret. That’s where the Cross changes everything.
Jesus didn’t come to start another religion. He came to set people free. Galatians 5:1 reminds us: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”
The Cross tells us we no longer have to earn God’s love. Grace has already paid the price. Then comes one of my favorite stories in American history.
Francis Scott Key spent an entire night watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry, wondering if the American flag still stood. When the sun finally rose…there it was. Hope survived the night. That story points us to another sunrise.
The Empty Tomb. The resurrection of Jesus reminds us that death didn’t win. Fear didn’t win. Sin didn’t win. Hope won. America teaches us that freedom is worth fighting for. Jesus teaches us that freedom was worth dying for.
This Independence Day, celebrate both . Be grateful for America. But never forget the greatest freedom you’ll ever experience is the freedom found in Jesus Christ. If the Son sets you free…you will be free indeed. This is one of my favorite stories to share with you. Once again, my friend, well done. This is a great reminder of the truth of God’s good work in His Son, Jesus Christ, the source of all of our freedoms. He is our creator and the ultimate sovereign over all of His creation and His creatures. Therefore, we are granted all of our rights and privileges from Him. Praise God that our forefathers recognized that truth. May our elected officials – local, state and federal, remember that great truth and work to preserve it. May we do the same. After all, we elect them to serve and to protect us and to preserve these truths for our future generations. Thank you for your continued work for the gospel (God’s good news of His Son setting us free from sin and death). This is worth celebrating indeed!
