The Power of Journaling: Finding Your Lydia Moment

In a world filled with noise and constant distraction, there’s something profoundly sacred about putting pen to paper. For Donna DeSalvo, author of “What If This Is Your Lydia Moment,” journaling became more than just a personal habit—it transformed into a lifeline during her darkest moments and eventually a message of hope for women everywhere.

Donna describes her journaling practice not as an artistic endeavor with fancy lettering or beautiful illustrations, but as a simple, authentic conversation with God. “It’s my way of getting along with the Lord, especially when I’m inside of study,” she explains. These raw, unfiltered thoughts became the foundation for her 30-day devotional aimed at women in every season of life. What began as private reflections during personal struggles, including the devastating loss of her husband of nearly 30 years, evolved into a powerful resource that now touches lives across the country.

The title of Donna’s book came from a profound spiritual insight while studying the biblical character Lydia. As a successful businesswoman and seeker of truth in the book of Acts, Lydia didn’t hesitate when encountering Paul’s message—she immediately opened her home and heart. “This is your Lydia moment. Don’t wait,” Donna heard clearly, prompting her to compile her journal entries into devotions that address universal struggles: feeling stuck, experiencing anger or confusion, grieving losses, and the all-too-common feeling of being “behind” in life.

This sense of being behind resonated deeply with Donna as she faced new challenges in her mid-50s. After her husband’s terminal diagnosis, she needed to become the sole provider while still caring for him. Looking at other women who had established businesses years earlier or who seemed more spiritually advanced, she felt the pressure to catch up. However, through her journey, she discovered an essential truth that many of us need to hear: God’s timing doesn’t align with our expectations, but His plans are perfect.

For those feeling stuck in life’s transitions—whether it’s children leaving home, retirement looming, or grieving a significant loss—Donna offers wisdom about embracing new seasons. “God has given me a room full of fourth and fifth graders that I get to pour into every Sunday,” she shares, highlighting how service becomes the fountain of youth that keeps purpose flowing through life’s changes. Rather than resisting new chapters, she encourages embracing them for the unique opportunities they present.

Perhaps most inspiring is Donna’s perspective on her life’s calling. Growing up, she believed she was destined to become an overseas missionary, but God had different plans. Instead of serving in foreign countries as she imagined, she now reaches women through her book, her church ministry, and even through media like podcasts. “I get to do a mission for Him right here in my local area,” she reflects, showing how God often fulfills our deepest desires in unexpected ways.
