Like many living in the path of Hurricane Ida, I became obsessed with the latest storm tracking. However, watching the updates hour after hour only seemed to cause a flood of anxiety in my spirit. You see, sixteen years earlier to the day, Hurricane Katrina hit the coast and totally destroyed all my family had. It was those memories of destruction and helplessness that caused me to cry out to God for His protection during this storm. I even specifically asked God to protect my family from losing power to our home.
Let’s face it, there is nothing quite as unnerving as feeling powerless, knowing you have no control over what is happening. While none of us want to live powerlessly, the truth is, that life is full of storms that we have no control over. Personally, I have had many storms in my life, starting with a difficult childhood, to a broken marriage, and financial struggles, just to name a few. Yet, in every situation, God has been that real power that has enabled me to move forward in my life.
Years ago, I learned that instead of asking God, “Why did this happen?” to ask Him a more powerful question, “What am I supposed to learn from this?” This week as I cried out to God, He reminded me that we can never lose His Power. That even if you lose everything else, His power is still there with us through the storm.

Dear God, I am filled with such anxiety and doubt right now. This storm in my life is too big and overwhelming for me. Teach me to place my trust in You, for You alone are the source of real power in my life. Come and invade my life with your Spirit. I commit my life to You today through faith in Your Son Jesus. Thank You, God, for hearing my prayer…Amen.
God has said, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).
